This pic was caught about ten minutes before the top photo was snapped. It is a view of the left sundog from above - the ice crystal layer was about half way down the mountain.
Yeah, OK, I'm used to see that often here as well, sometimes full circles with some "extra suns" symmetrically arranged around the perimeter. This one was so sharp and clear I thought it was the flare effect inside the lens!
