NO MORE WINING...
I am now officially in training for the ski season.
Firstly, I am cutting out all alcohol - that means my lovely evening glass of wine.
Secondly, I will be doing my stretches on a daily basis.
Thirdly, my abdominal exercises are a must.
Fourthly, I am going to begin a running routine... oh help!
Fifthly, there will be more fruit and vegetables included in my diet.
Sixthly, I am going to curb my carbohydrate and protein intake.
Seventhly, I am going to go to bed earlier at night and get up earlier in the morning.
Eighthly, I will remember to practice "everything in moderation, including moderation itself..."
So I have only THIRTY-SIX DAYS in which to practice my new lifestyle!

You've got a great plan, Dale!
Running's good, but cross training's better. Ever tried pilates? It's great for abs and flexibility. Also it's much better for your back than situps and much easier on the knees than running (trust me I know!).
If you do both, along with all that other stuff, you'll sure be a lean mean skiing machine in a month! Plus, the kids might enjoy doing the pilates with you....It's good for their abs, knees and backs, too.
There's your unsolicited free professional advice for the day!

I agree with rache - pilates is great, although I do yoga too and also ab exercises. Even my woman friends doing astanga (very advanced yoga) find they have to do a certain amount of ab exercises to really get the strong core muscles.

If there will be the snow comming I must go up earlier in the morning and clean the feetway from my an my neighbours house. I hate to go up ealier. (6 o'clock in the morning). But I love the snow.

My kundalini yoga teacher once said ashtange is not a good thing for women to do all the time- it apparently goes against the natural flow of women's bodies and rhythm. No idea if that's true or not, but there you go.
I like hatha myself. Off to tennis tonight, and the mood I'm in, I'm going to hit those green fuzzy balls very hard. *evil grin*

I don't know anything about yoga, but I do have a book on it...
Maybe I'll do a bit of reading this evening.
Right now my stretches are doing the trick and they feel great!

ReplyDeleteI'm addicted to running at the moment- I need to do more stuff like yoga and pilates.
I try to do strength training twice a week (should be 3) lately it's been once a week!
I WISH I could ski. I ski like a downhill racer, which is hazardous when other people are NOT...last time I skiied, I went straight down and screamed :"get out of the way!!!"
I kid you not.

ReplyDeleteJust for the record, astanga is one of the yogas of intense strength and were I training athletically, it would be one I would do. My women friends who do it are very fit, very strong and very healthy. Madonna (who is not my friend btw) but who is very fit, is an example.
ReplyDeleteHatha yoga is a much more gentle stretching type of exercise, which is good for centering and relaxing. I trained in martial arts for many years, and astanga was also originally a warrior fitness training. Many times when people say women shouldn't do something it may have roots in the fact that they are not supposed to be strong. Women are not supposed to do astanga for three days over their periods, or anyone on the full moon.
Astanga and Iyengar yoga developed from the same initial root - I like Iyengar myself as the asana revolves around correct alignment and you hold the pose for a longer period of time which releases my muscles. Astanga is dynamic and fluid as you move from pose to pose at a faster pace, It is very rigorous. Most serious astangi's practice for up to 2 hours a day, sometimes 6 days a week.
I currently manage and run a yoga charity and we offer many different types of yoga classes as well as pilates. I love the way pilates makes my spine feel!

I talked at some length with my astanga friend, she feels it is good to impart the correct information as she really loves astanga and goes yearly to Mysore to study with the man who started it. He is around 90 and looks about 65. All the varieties of yoga are different, in the end it stimulates a physical and internal change which is quite profound. I am sure Anne-Marie can attest to that.
ReplyDeleteWe use yoga to work with disabled children, the change is profound for them, and the delight on their faces when they come to our centre is amazing and joyful.

I will have to quiz her on its whereabouts.
There are regular yoga and pilates classes held at our local rec centre, so I am going to check it all out.
It's nice going into this armed with a bit of information.
