Jenny

Jenny broke her leg yesterday.
It was one of those times while playing - what kids do best - that it happened. An innocuous spill from her toboggan forced her to land heavily upon her right foot, causing the lower part of her tibia, where it meets the ankle, to chip. Luckily there was little pain, but swelling and discomfort prompted her to have it checked out.
Smart girl! After reading the x-ray, her doctor immediately booked Jenny into surgery for early this morning in Cranbrook. The surgeon was able to push the chipped piece of bone back into position and hold it there with two pins.
The pins will need to be removed after several weeks, but non-surgically. The doctor will simply have to draw them out - no anaesthesia needed and no pain. Surgery now is so much less invasive than in the past - she has no incision nor any sutures.
Jenny was brave, the procedure went well and she is now resting in relative comfort ...the lower part of her right leg encased in a large, white plaster cast with her wee toes sticking out the end.
Get well soon, Jenny Benny!

  1. Agh I'm so sorry Dale! That will put paid to Jenny's fun in the snow this year, won't it? Poor wee lassie ;-( Give her a hug from me and tell her to enjoy the spoiling she is obviously going to get for a couple of weeks...because it won't last - not from her siblings anyway ;-)

  2. Dale - you put the mockers on it with your last post - cautiously happy indeed! Consider yourself bitten firmly on the bum.

Still, I am so glad that although poor Jenny will be sidelined for a while she has at least not suffered too badly with the treatment. Tell her it could be worse - Soph spent a Christmas in plaster once with a broken arm. Unfortunately it was between 30-40 degrees C for most of the time she had the cast on. Hot, itchy and NO SWIMMING at the beach. I'm guessing Jenny might still persuade Mum to let her have the odd hill run under supervision ...

Give her my best Christmas hugs.

  4. Yes Val, she will not be able to ski, skate, toboggan, swim or walk ...and I think Bobby will do his best to treat her well - as best a twelve year old boy can do, anyway!
    Beth will spoil her rotten.

LOL Margie - had to Google "mockers"... :)
As far as the weather is concerned, we are now sitting at -30 degrees. I am sure Jenny will be quite happy to sit at home in front of the fire.
    i wish i could...
Jenny is a member of the local swim club and swimming during the winter here is commonplace. We have two sets of hot springs that make way for warm workouts in outdoor swimming pools. Just another perk to living here!
We will have to see how she is after a couple of months. The location of the break might make it possible for Jenny to wear ski boots and keep her ankle stable. ...we'll see!

Yes, it could be worse, Anne-Marie. Good to think of it that way. She's in good spirits and will soak up the attention!

Thanks to all and I will pass on the Get Well Hugs and Wishes!

    xx

  6. -30 is really cold Val!

Your nose sticks together when you breathe.
Your lungs hurt when you run.
    The air zings.
The snow is so crunchy it squeaks when you step in it.
You have to walk slowly to avoid raising the wind chill factor.
    The air stings exposed skin.
If you stick your head out the door at night, you can hear the cold...

  7. OMG, it sounds positively dangerous...noisy cold? Squeaky snow? And even worse, self clamping noses? Ouch!!! I won't complain about my waterkoud again...ever!

  8. Oh Dale,

Give Jenny Benny a hug from Auntie for me - and send her my love. She's a strong and tough girl (just like her mum) and will get thru this swimmingly (oops there's a pun for you).

    Love Aunt Lesley

  10. Ouch!
Sorry bout that. My son Lukas went through a similar treatment back when he was 7 and chipped avay a piece above his left elbow. Those studs peeking out of the skin looks scary....
And regarding the weather, remember what I wrote about the "Lazy Sun" some while ago?
Here we are comfortably warm still but there will be a rapid change towards really low temperatures here too after Christmas

  11. Minus 30??? Jeez Louise! You are made of stern stuff indeed, hot springs or no. You wouldn't get me out of my ten layers of thermals for anything in weather like that. Bet the birth rate nine months after such winters is a bit ordinary. Or is that how you keep warm?

  12. Heho Margie, the birth rate should actually be pretty good after such extreme lows. I would expect that people would want to get up very very close and extremely personal!

  13. It doesn't matter what kind of cold it is, Val. When you're cold, you're cold...
So, if it suits you, complain all you want - I've done my fair share!

Hey, Lesley! I've passed the hugs along. Jen and I went Christmas shopping today - she had a list a yard long! lol
    What a sweetie she is!

Thanks, too, Grace! She is quite the little trooper and Lesley's right - I see a lot of me in Jenny!

Hans, I remember your post about the sun. We can't escape the dipping temperatures, living in these northern climes! At least we can't see Jenny's pins - they're inside her cast.

LOL Margie and Val! The cold weather and early dark does constitute an earlier bedtime... ;) Whatever it takes to stay warm.
I'll check back with you in nine months... NO, NOT me!

I offer my best wishes and prayers for a speedy recovery for Jenny.
