Salmon Run or Why I Love Fall
I have never been able to explain my love of autumn.
Yesterday morning, while having my coffee on the deck, I watched the sunrise touch the peaks with gold as the light crept down the slopes across the lake.
The mountains are now rimmed with the flaming colour of the larch trees as they prepare to shed their needles for winter's hibernation.
I can hear the honking of the geese as they wing their way north... they will fly north in the fall when searching for food while on their journey south.
The leaves are piling up in the yard and I can now see all the way to the road.
I've been busy in the kitchen stocking, storing, making preserves, spaghetti sauce and baking pumpkin pies.
The true sign of fall in my neighbourhood is when the Kokanee salmon begin their run upstream to their spawning grounds.
Our creek is directly across the road and, if we had a larger property, it could be considered as running through our front yard...
I spent quite a while this afternoon sitting on the creek bank watching those amazing fish struggle doggedly against the current, driven entirely by instinct.
Their skin has turned a bright red and their lower jaws have grown outwards and upwards in the typical way of a spawning salmon.
Kokanee are a fresh water fish, so they never make it as far as the ocean after hatching, preferring large lakes in which to live out their four year life cycle.
We are being visited by different kinds of birds as they pass through on their way south and their unique calls are carried upon the tangy autumn breezes.
Bear sightings are more common now, as they hurriedly search for sustenance to bring them through hibernation.
The deer are beginning to congregate, although only the does and fawns are prevalent - it is hunting season and the bucks know to remain hidden at this time of year.
Now that I think of it, I may just have explained my love of autumn!

Dale,
ReplyDeleteYou make me homesick for the mountains!
Autumn always touched my soul more deeply there than here for some reason - maybe some of the same reasons. Your writing brought a piece of that feeling back to me. It's one of the things I miss most.
I so envy how close you are to so much of nature just outside your door.
I enjoy having my coffee on the deck mornings, too; but the view....well, it's not the mountains.
Love,
Rachel
are those your feet BTW?...
ReplyDeleteI do love to write... thanks.
ReplyDeleteIt pleases me that my writing can now be read and appreciated!
Yes Gypsy, those are my feet...
If you look closely, or enlarge the photo, you can see the red fish in the water to the left of my boots.
The creek is full of spawning salmon.
BTW fish don't have feet, so I don't know why they call it a salmon "run"...
ReplyDeleteIt's a fair deal with only winners: you look through my lens, I look through your words. Brilliant!
ReplyDeleteOh and thanks for the motorcycle comment "How to be Sexy with Bugs in Your Teeth"...
xxxx
Hi Dale,
ReplyDeleteOur class is walking over to the Humber River this morning to watch the salmon run upstream too! I'm sure the scenery won't be as lovely as the one you've described, but I am looking forward to it.
"What does the salmon say when he hits a wall?"
"Dam!"
*curtsy*
Thanks for the good wishes.
Cheers,
AM
LOL Anne-Marie that's a good one!
ReplyDeleteI have a mental picture of hundreds of red horny salmon, with feet, in running shoes hoofing it through the hills....ouch...can't get rid of it!
Need less caffiene...
Nice boots, BTW!
ReplyDeleteiv'e just seen a salmon doing a half marathon in nike air max???..your fault!..
ReplyDeleteHi Dale,
ReplyDeleteThanks for the short and sweet message. I'm OK now, but had things botched. I need to now wait another two weeks -- that is until Friday the 13th! Lucky I'm not superstitious.
Love Lesley
Lovely post, interesting fish and great shoes!
oops
ReplyDeleteSorry Gypsy!
ReplyDeleteits ok rache quite an interesting sight it was...>:0)..
ReplyDeleteHi Dale,
ReplyDeleteYou described Autumn very beautifully! I like autumn best when it transitions from summer. Where I live, you can use the heater and air conditioner in the same day, until it starts to get cold all day. I love autumn when the leaves turn into bright beautiful colors. Wearing a comfortable sweater that looks good is nice too, along with drinking hot tea and cocoa while sitting by a fireplace or campfire.
The downside of autumn is when the leaves start turning brown and are completely off the trees, and when it gets so cold that even when I'm wearing two sweaters and a wool jacket, I'm still cold. As much as I love the holidays, it's not so great when you try to lose weight. First there's Halloween, the candy looks so tempting! and then there's Thanksgiving Day, I do love Pumpkin pie! but I make a pretty good pumpkin pie cheesecake.
Wow! I sure went on and on about autumn, but it is good to talk to you after being so busy.
Take care.
Hi Dale,
ReplyDeleteYou and Anne-Marie are in synch with the salmon this week! How beautiful your area sounds. We are getting a bit of colour change here, but not too much so far. I'm sure the last couple of days of rain and cold that we've had will help it along.
I can totally relate to your preserving things and baking pumpkin pies. I did a gigantic apple pie last week, all homemade, and I typically get into making apple sauce about now. All the McIntosh apples are so cheap and plentiful. I can never get enough of my homemade applesauce. :)
Happy canning snd baking!! Fall splendour has arrived!
What a lovely, evocative post. You seem to live so closely in tune with your beautiful surroundings, working and moving with the seasons. Gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteAnne-Marie, I told that joke about the fish last night while mountain biking - it was met with groans...
ReplyDeleteLast night a bear spread our garbage from one end of the yard to the other.
ReplyDeleteHe or she had to climb the steps to the front door to knock over the can...
I thought the gate was closed.
maybe the gate was closed..maybe those bears are getting clever..
ReplyDeleteMaybe...
ReplyDeleteThey've hung around us humans long enough - they must have learned something...
I think it was a dancing bear - garbage was flung everywhere!
ReplyDeletemaybe they were dancing to..trash by the new york dolls...
ReplyDeleteI saw a racoon get into a neighbour's garbage this morning.
ReplyDeleteSo you like burgundy. The Burgundy colour is named after a region in france and it's famous wine. Guess thru association it means you're a wino.
Just came back from a fabulous dinner with Anne-Marie. She is awesome. Just as real and true in person as she is in her blogs. A great day is when you meet someone who is really special - so this day was great. The evening started with a glass at Merlot at my place - I prefer merlot to burgundy wine.
L
Aww, Dale, the only reason little sis beat me to it is because I had to drive home from her place.
ReplyDeleteShe is awesome too, and yes, we had a lot of fun and enjoyed some excellent food in Little India. I met the two cute kitties and got a bit looped on the wine because I haven't had a drop since coming home from California, and because I am not well and it hit my head rather quickly.
It was a great night indeed!
I am so glad Lannio and Anne-Marie got to meet - that is so awesome!
ReplyDelete...I am also a wee bit envious.
There are so many great people I have met through Pete and Rachel!
I have yet to meet any blogger friends, but Gypsy and I are going on a prescription drug induced flying-in-the-ether holiday together...
LOL
Yes L, I know that Burgundy is named after an area in France, but I prefer white wine myself...just the colour burgundy.
We had a few (too many) glasses around the neighbour's burn-the-roof campfire last night.
They are re-roofing their house and burning all the bits.
...and getting the neighbours drunk.
LOL Gypsy - I think you're right about the song the bears were dancing to. Bobby saw the bear yesterday on his way home from a friend's house...
George is going to help the neighbours with their roof today and I'm going to relax.
dale!!..have a fab time at the concert..we shall arrange the prescription drug induced flying-in-the-ether holiday together...soon..cant wait!...now restrain yourself from mauling pete and rog wont you?..no i didn't think so...have fun...
ReplyDeleteI hope to meet you someday too Dale, that would be awesome! I wish I were going to that Who concert, however, I am listening to one of their past performances on Sirius radio's Who channel. It ROCKS! You've got to try it if you haven't yet, the free trial gives you three days.
ReplyDeleteDale,
ReplyDeleteWho needs restraint?!?! (no pun intended) Have a blast at the concert! Can't wait to hear about it!
Travel safely - astrally and otherwise.
Cheers!
Rachel
