FISH FLOATS FUNNY

There has been a death in the family...
I went to feed the fish this morning, only to find Chicken Nugget floating upside down in the water.

He/she has been a fixture in a lovely bowl on our buffet, along with his/her buddy, Spoons, for almost two years now.
Our little Jenny will be devastated - I sense a funeral in the making for this afternoon.

At the moment our dear little goldfish is still resting at the surface of the water - very much at peace, it would seem.
For Spoons, it appears to be life as usual...

Our children have experienced the passing of several pets and it's never easy, but they are learning a major fact of life.
I would love to protect my little ones from ugliness that goes along with the all beauty of this life, but that would be unfair. Life must be lived - the good and the bad.

My bets are that Jenny will want to locate a replacement goldfish as soon as possible!

  1. so sorry to hear of that....its never easy when pets die as they are as much of the family structer as us humans...sometimes its a way of preparing children for death of loved ones in a different way although never the less just as devestating...i have buried so many of chantals pets and my own in the past ..fish/cats/hamsters/rabbits/snakes/birds/even a ladybird once...we just have to remember to take our little ones feelings seriously in these matters...and show our children that loving them was the most important part....

  3. Gypsy, yes it's all a learning experience, yet tough when our first instinct as a parent is to protect our children.

...but we are the most important teachers our children will have, too.

Good to hear from you, Mike & we're all doing fine here.
    Thanks!

    :)

  5. Beth, you're not evil, but keep away from the likes of my friend Gypsy...

    LOL

    Jenny did not disappoint me.
The first thing she said when she saw Chicken Nugget was, "Oh well, I'll just get another one..."

  7. Aww,
I am sorry to hear about Chicken Nugget :( When I was little, my brother and I would bury our fish. He even made little head stones. He would find an empty vial and put water in it so the fish could still be in the water. Then we would bury it. I would get flowers from my gram's garden and it really made me feel better. I think about that from time to time.

Now I have all kinds of critters buried in my yard. Three of my feral cats are burried under the trees where they used to lay. So I think having a "funeral" helps to this day.

    I'll be thinking of Jenny.

  15. Dale, I think your outlook is very healthy, kids have to learn that everything isn't always perfect sometimes people are born sometimes they die it is a fact of life. A fact that you are really never to young to learn.

When I was 8 my Uncle was at a party at my house (my first holy communion to be exact) and apparently he tipped back a few and he walked up to the fish bowl grabbed a fish by the tail and swallowed him right in front of me! Needless to say I was devistated, never really liked that Uncle much anyway!

I am sure your kids will take this in stride.

  16. Dale,
Sorry about the little Nugget dying. You're right about not shielding kids- yours seem to be growing up just fine under your good guidance.

    Welcome back, Angus!

    Cheers,

  17. Hi Dale,

I'm sorry to hear about the untimelt passing of Chicken Nugget. I LOVE the name - it suits the fish in the picture so much! You'd think Spoons would be more upset, especially having Nugget float there, but fish will be fish. *L* I guess that old trick of buying another exact same fish before your daughter sees the state of Nugget wouldn't work, huh? ;) I think kids usually notice that kind of thing!
