Did anyone notice that was an American IRS man in the cartoon on my blog? I wasn't able to find a Revenue Canada photo...
We owned our own business for 7 years & really felt the crunch when we had to file our income tax.
The business was set up as a proprietorship, so we were taxed as individuals. It was tough to save for such time when barely making ends meet, as it was. We always hoped for a refund & were able to get our income down as much as possible, but we always seemed to owe the government in the end.
Last fall my husband was offered a good job working for some friends who own a construction company. We were aware of the health issues related to his line of work (auto body repair & painting) & that was the main reason for our desision. The time was right, so my husband accepted.
It is nice not having the headaches of owning our own business, but I miss it too. Maybe someday we'll go back to being self-employed. I would definitely recommend it, expecially this day & age.
Taxes are forefront on my mind right now because the Canadian tax deadline is on Sunday at midnight. I got behind on the books after we closed the business & then being so sick for so long last winter.
So, here I am scrambling to catch up & get everything ready to submit! I enjoy the work - I'm an accountant, after all! I have today off from work, so I will get most everything finished today while the kids are at school.
It promises to be a lovely day here in the mountains. ...my older daughter was swimming in the lake the other day...
Hi Dale, Yes I noticed the USA IRS image, because I have read in many places that it is unconstitutional and voluntary - but don't be loud about that because there are many ways they can make your life difficult (in the USA) anyway.
Looking at the tax system I have the impression that we are not supposed to be self-employed!
On the plane to South Africa we had to fill in a form of the SARS. Given my interest in the tax subject it took me only seconds to realise that SARS meant South African Revenue Service (in all other countries it means scaremongering, like the bird flu nonsense nowadays). (Val thinks this subject is far too taxing and she has gone to bed ;-)
As you know I love word play, like income / out-go. Today I invented this one: if you don't get the exercise you'll have to accept the extra size! Love Koos
thanks for your comments on my blog. I wonder if it was your sister? Do you have a photo you could share? That would be cool.
I know what you mean about taxes. I've also got a property tax crunch at the same time as income tax crunch this weekend. Won't bore you with the long story - in short the city (TO) wants 3 years of property tax from me even though I've owned the place less than 1 year. Because they're too stupid and disorganized to actually produce bills on newer properties each year! Trying to get previous owners to cough up - not easy! City couldn't care less - "pay up sucker!"
Anyway, love your photos of your beautiful part of the country - please keep putting them up.
And Koos, for those of us in Toronto, SARS has a completely different, but equally unpleasant connotation: the scary disease that was brought here from Asia a few years back. All is calm now, but it was a little worrisome at the time, and there were a few unfortunate deaths.
I have no problem paying taxes to a government who actually cares about its citizens...sadly this isn't the case in the US. boo hiss! I'm happy being an ex-pat at the moment...
Hi Dale! I had to laugh when I saw the picture. It is so true. Taxes for everything. Income, property, food, gas, sales, utilities, it reminds me of The Beatles song Taxman. Sad thing is, you can't hide from it. My dad used to say, I don't have to do anything but die and pay taxes. I hope you have a good weekend.
Hi Dale Sad to hear you had to lose your independance, But equally sure you made a good decision there. I'm a freelancer so also self employed, but fortunately I don't have overheads or staff so my tax situation is pretty simple. I love my independance and wouldn't willingly trade it, but I do miss having a bit of security and of course, I can never afford to be ill! It's the queens birthday here tomorrow so there's lots of celebrations and f;ea markets going on all day throughout all Dutch cities. Should be fun. Have a good one yourself Dale Love Val
I understand taxes in Canada are quite enormous. I am sure you know more about that than I do. The closest I ever got to Canada was Rochester, New York, and a flight near over Niagara Falls back in the 1960's.
Ain't that the truth!
ReplyDeleteBrilliant, Dale! Couldn't have summed it up better.....
ReplyDeleteLike most people I believe in fair taxation - for everyone else! ;-)
Have a wonderful tax free day
Love
Val
ha ha dale you rebel....
ReplyDeleteThat's funny, Dale.
ReplyDeleteI am awaiting a very nice return this year...going right back out to pay for a flight across the pond, mind you, but welcomed nevertheless.
Cheers,
AM

Yep, I noticed the difference. I couldn't think of anything clever to say, so I left it as an unsaid.
ReplyDeleteThose are pretty good reasons. I'm glad yoru husband got a good job.
So did you manage to catch up on everything? In one day????
