Humm, the only celebration i know on that day is the city of Lyon's Fete des lumieres. Its in celebration of the end of the plague. People line their window ledges with candles, people walk around and youths throw eggs, water and flour at people (the latter tradition has to do with Marie Antoinette's remark about "let them eat cake"). Recent reports say that much of this activity has been stopped because the youths were overtaking the wonderment of the day. I was lucky to enjoy.

I'm gonna take a guess to see whether I really know ya. Could the date depend upon snow conditions? Perhaps if there weren't any snow would the date be delayed? Does it have anything to do with trails of "panoramic" white snow? I'm guessing it has something to do with the beginning of ski season? I betcha it does.

Are you talking about your trip to the Bahamas or that warm place you go? Is my memory serving me well? Or are you speaking of the opening of ski season??? Enlighten us please :)
