...of Flames and Thunder...

The weather had been warm and sunny and the storm came upon us with little warning.
The first thunderstorm of the year rolled in darkly and its booming echoes tossed and bounced along the length of our valley.
In its wake the cleansing rains of spring followed, leaving the air pungent with pine and fir mingled with the warm scent of damp pavement.

Last evening, after the thunder passed, there remained an air of expectancy...
Our Calgary Flames were preparing to play their fifth game in the quarter-final series of the Stanley Cup.
The television drew eager eyes as our home team outscored the Anaheim Mighty Ducks once more!

Then I awoke this morning, our win fresh in my mind, to the frantic honking of a motorist's horn as it raised the sleepy souls of our wee town.
We peered out the front window to be greeted by the sight of giant flames leaping and dancing along the hill through the trees.
With our mouths agape, we stared, transfixed, as we watched what appeared to be imminent danger upon our doorstep.

As it turns out, it was a scheduled practice burn of an old farmhouse by our local volunteer fire department.

Now I can return with relief to our chant of...

...Go Flames Go!

  2. Yikes! Hows that for a good morning?

You'll be pleased to know that as soon as I finish writing here to you, I am changing my clothes and going to catch that sun!!! A little later than I wanted but I am making sure that I get it. I could easily deny myself this, because I still have a lot of things to do, but I ALWAYS have a lot of things to do. I'm gonna catch the sun while I can!

Cheers! Glad your house isn't going to burn down. : P

  3. Yes, Gyspy, it was a bit frightening, but only for a moment. What we saw in the morning was only the shed going up in flames. That was nothing compared to when we watched the house go up later in the afternoon!

I hope that bit of sun is WARM for you PTfan!

It's been pouring rain here all day - but a nice rain, that is making the leaves burst to fullness & the grass green.

The kids are watching the movie "Fun With Dick & Jane" while eating popcorn in the living room.
Ha Ha - I just vacuumed...

  4. Flaming furies that must have been nerve wracking Dale! At first I thought you were writing a poem -beautiful descriptions again. You have amazing powers of description! Glad to hear it was all for a drill, though and the old homestead was safe from the devouring flames. Hope your other flames carry on devouring though!
    Take care Dale

  5. Thanks Val!

I love writing - it's like a release & an escape for me.
Not to mention the feeling of satisfaction when it all falls into place!

  6. Dale,
You have quite the writing talent there, my dear. I was mesmerised by the prose. Glad it was just an organised torching and not something more serious.

Go Flames Go, I guess. I have no idea who's in the playoffs, though I know perfectly well who *isn't*. :)

    Cheers,

    Thank you.

My husband knows all too well who "isn't" in the playoffs, but he jumped ship a long time ago.

As for me, I'm still a Habs fan at heart.

...but I can hardly go around flying a big red & blue C when those all about have flaming C's flying at will from their rooftops...

    xylob ... I guess that's wimpy me

  9. Hi Vale (sort of Val-Dale)
That South African Englishwoman keeps pipping me to the comment post, saying exactly what I wanted to say about your writing.
Then again, she is very young, has faster fingers, and writes in her mother tongue, so what can one do?
    Love you both,
    Koos

  10. Thanks Koos

You do really well writing in a second or third language, too!
I wish I was as multilingual as you are.

    :)

  12. I would have been scared sh*t-less! I hate fire, or earthquakes and everything connected with nature's wrath! Brrrr!!!

I have been trained as a fire warden and I know what fire can do and how quickly it can spread. Yikes!

    Beautifully written post, Dale

  13. HI Dale,

Wow, what a scare! I guess that will succedd in rousing a sleepy person out of bed!

Well, we can't say 'Go Flames Go' in this household. *L* I only know about the Senators being in the playoffs, since we're in Ottawa (can you tell I'm not a sports fan??). In this household, apparently we must cheer for the Leafs, though...and no more cheering for this year. :)

  14. Hi Dale!

At least it has been sunny and warm. Minus the thunderstorm.I sure would of let out a few expletives if I saw a fire on the other side of my trees. I'm glad it was only a test.

I hope your Flames do good. I'm not much of a Hockey fan anymore. I used to be a Blackhawk fan back in the 60's/70's. Haven't really watched since.

ITA tomorrow. I hope you can watch!

  15. Aww,
Dale, sorry about the Habs being sent off to start their golfing season. I know a certain colleague of mine will be heart-broken too. :(

    Go Flames Go, right?
