FULL MOON TONIGHT

In celebration of the current full moon, I have posted this piece of artwork.

After reading the book Moon: The Life and Death of a Rock Legend, I literally felt compelled to do this sketch of Keith.

This was my first attempt at a human portrait.

  1. Hi Dale,
Your sketch is really great. Is it charcoal, or pencil?

  2. Hi Anne-Marie

I did it in pencil & used an eraser for shading.

    Nothing fancy.

I usually have a couple or 3 different pencils of different lenths for getting into the hard-to-reach places.
Sometimes I use my left hand to shade, as well.
    I'm a rightie.

    Thanks!

  3. Hi Dale
    I sped right on over!
Wow!!!! It's incredible and such a beautiful representation of that wonderfully gifted, proud, funny, entertaining and brilliant soul (are there enough adjectives there?)

I've always admired you select few who can really draw. That to me is the mark of the real artist. I like the technique you've used, as it almost looks like charcoal.

Compliments too from Erik Jan - he's not a blogger so can't leave a comment, but he told Koos he was impressed!

  4. For a first attempt at a human portrait, I think you did a fantastic job.

  5. Hi Dale,
What a beautiful portrait that is!
Do you feel like doing this more often - and then publish here? I would be delighted to follow your development as an artist.
Thanks for drawing my attention to it.
    Love

I don't think there could ever be too many adjectives to describe Mr. Moon!

Your pun did not escape me on this one.
You are a great man of words -
    And photos...

    Thanks for your compliments.

Like Koos, I am going to have to find a larger place to live in order to accommodate my enlarged ego!

Seriously though, I do appreciate all your encouragement & I might get off my duff & make time to do more of the things I love.
I must admit that drawing is a challenge!

    Thanks all!

  7. Oh, Koos

    Please thank Erik Jan, too!

I tried to check out his blog, but alas, Dutch is beyond my relm of speakage!
Although it is, like English, a Germanic language.

I loved chatting in French, though - a Romance language.

    :)

  8. Dale,
Even though I speak German (and English), Dutch stumps me a lot of the time too! It was fun chatting in French today!

  9. Hi Dale,
To answer your question: the French is from my mother, and the German from my father. We weren't allowed to speak English at home growing up; not so bad now, we're all at least tri-lingual (my brother can also speak Spanish and Italian). My Spanish is sort of level two-ish.

    Cheers,

  10. Hi Dale,
Fun, chatting with all these wonderful people last night.
    Flemish...
The West-Felmish complain that their interviews on Flemish tv are sub-titled, or else the other Flems would have no clue what they say! (That complaint was sub-titled too!!!)
Do I speak it? I can make a general Flemish sound, could maybe impersonate reliably a news reader (but they try -and fail- to speak General Civilised Dutch, sort of the King's Dutch).
So the answer should be no, I can't, Just as I can't emulate any other accent than Amsterdams reliably. I lived there around my 11th year, the most impressionable age when it comes to accents.
Oops that is a long reply ;-)

  11. Another one for you Dale,

Altavista has a translation service called Babelfish.
I tried it on Erik-Jan's site.

    Nice result:
'wants the water recreation in and the blockhouse Naarden to promote'
    meaning:
'wants to promote the water recreation and the fortification in Naarden'
The silly word order is correct in Dutch (and passable in German).
So if you do a bit of decoding you'll be able to read the English version.

However, after some googling I found this site,
    Erik-Jan the photographer

  12. My Personal Coach says: "can reliably impersonate".

  13. Thanks Koos!

It's interesting the different accents & dialects to be found all over Europe & UK.
I am always amazed that someone from one part of England will recognise where another English person is from by their accent!

Apparently it is the same in Belgium! Subtitles in the same country - what a hoot!

Here in Canada there is not much difference in accents or dialects considering how large the country is.
But I can always tell someone from Newfoundland...

I went to EJ's website. What a great photographer he is! I spent some time browsing through some of his work.
Very handsome man he is, too...

    ;)

  16. Hiya Dale,

Fantastic drawing. You are quite the artist I see. So life like.

Sent you 2 pics. Let me know if you can open them. I have lots more. Kinda funny takin' pics of the computer screen. But they turned out pretty good for the most part.

Peace, love and light to you and yours,
    Ric

  18. Hi Dale, very nice drawing of Moonie. you are obviously very talented. I was lucky enough to see him with The Who a few times and saw him in his Bentley just round the corner from Carnaby Street in the late sixties/early seventies. I wish that I could draw, but I can't. I have an Aunt who lives in Vancouver and keep promising to go and see her. One day maybe. Well, I'm in the middle of decorating so I had best get back to it. Mark
