JENNY BENNY (or God drives a boom truck...)

Yesterday, my younger daughter, Jenny, arrived home from skiing a few minutes before I got home from work.

She met me at the door, her big blue eyes open wide.
"Mum, I think there's going to be a thunderstorm!", she exclaimed breathlessly.

"Why do you think that?", I responded - puzzled.

"Well", she began, "there was a man in a big truck who came to the door and said that our power might be out for about ten minutes"...

  1. Awww...Bless her!

She must have thought it was going to be a father of a storm, not just a mother ;-)

Do you often get power cuts when you have big electrical storms? We used to have awesome lightning strikes on the farm where I lived in South Africa, but we didn't have any electricity, so power wasn't a problem. Nevertheless, I do remember lightning flashing across the room from the redundant light switches!

Thanks for giving me my daily smile, Dale.

  2. Hi Val

We often have power outages due to thunder & lightning storms. Some are quite ferocious & are accentuated by the echoes of the thunder reverberating between the mountains.

Jenny was disappointed, because I explained to her that it was not the time of year for storms.
She loves a good thunder-boomer, as do I.

I remember at our cottage in the moutains of Quebec we had no power, so we were not affected by outages there.

    :o)

  3. Oh, Jenny's a gem!
    How old is she?

Sorry it takes me so long to reply to your comments but, I can't blog from work and I do it when I come home.
Today one of my managers was constantly over my shoulder, checking if I ever went online...Eeeeek!

So, thanks for your fab comment...It is so exciting, too good to be true!!!!
It was great that you could come the last minute to chat. Maybe more next time???

  4. By the way, Dale, have you noticed anything about K's ID photo on his blog. D'you think that clock's started its own life??

  5. Hi Dale,
I love watching summer storms from the balcony or a porch. Nothing beats warm rain- the sound, the smell...

I love the casual line, "my daughter arrived home from skiing..." What a charmed life the young lady leads!

No spring skiing here, just spring cleaning coming soon. :)

  6. LOVE that the truck says BC Hydro. They pick on me here for calling electricity hydro. Silly people.

  7. Hi Marietta, Anne-Marie & Janey

Jenny is 8 & will be turning 9 in June.

It might seem as though she lives a charmed life, but don't ask her that! To her skiing can be a chore at times.
It just happens to be so readily available here & we take advantage of that opportunity.
Skiing is one of the reasons we live where we do!

    Hydro vs electricity...

I've learned to call it "power".

What generates the electricity in your neck of the woods, Janey?
I know that it's nuclear power in Toronto, AM.
What about your power in Holland, Val?
Is it nuclear, as well? I remember a photo that Koos put up featuring what looked like a cooling tower, if memory serves me correctly.
Here in BC it is power from huge hydro electric dams.

    Thanks everyone.

    Love

  9. According to Koos, our electicity is mainly powered by North Sea Gas, and is supplemented by wind power - huge modern windmills placed at intervals along the dykes. We get lots of wind here!

Thanks Dale, and have a great weekend, dear

  10. Hi Val

I love the idea of harnessing the wind for a clean, efficient source of power!

I should have already thought of that as a power source in Holland - that land so famous for its beautiful windmills!

Has Koos been restoring his clock?

You have a great weekend, too, Val!

  11. Hi Dale!

:)) Jenny is adorable! That made me smile. Thanks!!

I love when storms are coming and you hear the distant thunder as it gets darker and more ominous. But then when its upon us, I don't like it anymore.

    Have a fabulous weekend!!

  12. We get some really great thnderstorms in the summer here in PA but when I lived in Texas (you know everything is bigger in Texas)the thunder and lightening storms were huge, never failed the power went out everytime.

Sounds to me like your Jenny and my Emily would get on famously, same type of innocent curosity accompanied with fierce intellegence.

  13. Hi Zoe & Meg

I, too, love a summer thunderstorm.

In a very dry season, we often get the dreaded "dry lightning".
Like it says, it's lightning without rain.
If it strikes, it can cause a forest fire - often devastating.

Two summers a go it was very dry & we were cooling ourselves at the beach when a storm rolled in. Lightning, thunder, no rain...

There was a huge strike on the mountainside across the lake, about 2 km distant.
No sooner had the lightning struck, when a fire started & we called it in to the forestry service.

They were on it within the hour, using helicopters with fire retardent & water bomber planes. It was right there in front of us & we could watch all the action from the comfort of our own home...

It can get a wee bit scary around here when it's tinder dry.

Thanks again everyone for your great comments.
    This is so much fun!

    Have a super weekend.
    Dale

  14. That is one crazy experience you just shared with us. Dang.

I am having a very lazy Saturday. I have caught up on the blogs today. I'm at the computer much too much. I have a list of things to do a mile long. Oh well. Sometimes you just gotta chill. So chill I will. : )

  15. Hi Dale,
Things are calming down a bit. Antoinette's husband flew in this morning to help them all with the return on Monday, and they're back finishing their final packing in their rental. The two older kitties are back out socialising, but my skittish one and a half year old is still hiding in the bookshelf. What a wiener. :)

And yes, I do notice hockey comments. ;)

    Cheers,

  16. Moi again...
One of the rare moments in the past few months where I can visit all the blogs.

My mommy is making me breakfast, I'm so spoiled!!!! Then off for shopping and lunch, this fine Sunday.

    Hope you're having fun too.
