Remembering Tiger Lilies

This evening my family and I were sitting around the dinner table and the topic of our favourite flowers came up.
It put me in mind of my own favourite blossom, the tiger lily.

Tiger lilies remind me of when I was a small child at our summer home.
Our cottage was made entirely of stone and built into the hillside overlooking a small lake in the Laurentian Mountains of Quebec.

My Mum's garden was a lacy riot of colour that flowed around the rocks and shrubs and down the gentle slope toward the water.
Having family picinics on the rolling lawn beside a garden of wildflowers, with the tiger lilies bobbing and waving above the others, are among my earliest and fondest memories.

...bees are also persistent in those reminiscings...

I love wildflowers and this year I will be planting them hither and yon in my own garden - with tiger lilies again watching over.

  1. Hi Dale
A new wave of flower power is sweeping the earth all the way from Rotterdam to Windermere v.v.
The tiger lilies are stunning. The picture is completed by your memories of the Laurentians, or as Kate and Anna sing in Complainte pour Ste Catherine: "J'ai pas d'motel aux Laurentides".

    As always tres bilingue,
    Your Koos

    'Tis the season!

The photo is fabulous, but I can't take the credit, as I pulled it off the net. I'm not sure who took the photo.
I had a look at many pictures of my favourite flower, but this one quite caught my eye.

Les Laurentides have a very special place in my heart.
My Mum & Dad still live on a lake among those low, rolling hills.
It is my good fortune to have the opportunity to go visit them with my 2 younger kids this coming August!

    :)

  6. Hi Dale
Flowers are like music. They can lift you up when all else fails.

Beautiful, rich, exotic Tiger lLilies...love the trip down memory lane too. You are so good. Thanks for the music in words.

  7. Hi Dale,

I share in your love for Tiger Lillies. We always had them at my parents' house (and they probably still do!). Tiger Lillies and Peonys, one sniff and it's the summers of my youth. Funny how that works with smells. :)

  8. Hi Dale,
I love tiger lillies. We used to have them just under the veranda at the front of our childhood home. My favourites from that time period.

Lovely picture, and it's a great time of year for flowers.

  9. Val, thanks for your kind words about my writing - it feels good to be complimented by one who is trained in teaching the English language.
As I've said before, I love to write!

MB, there must be a lot of tiger lilies in the area of our respective childhoods.

AM, I wonder what it is about that lily that reminds us of our youth so much...

    Thanks all!

    :)

  10. Hi Dale!
I too have Tiger Lillies in my garden. The color is so bold and they just bring a kind of exotic feel to the yard.

My favorite flower though is the Pansy. They just look like a happy flower. And come in many colors. But I do love all flowers. They all remind me of my grandmother who had the most beautiful garden on the block. Nice memories.

  11. Hi Dale,

Tiger Lily is Michael Hutchence's (INXS) and Paula Yates' daughter's name. I didn't know it came from this beautiful flower...Wow, the colours are lovely!

Your descriptions are so vivid, I feel I'm "reading" a painting...

    Spring is so wonderful!

  12. Zoe, I, too, love pansies. They are such lively short little fellows - always planted in the mosh pit so they can see the show!
My Grandma had an amazing garden, too!

Marietta, thank you for the generous description of my writing.
    "reading a painting" - I like that!
The same to Val with "music in words".

Those are dear compliments & I thank you all for your encouragement.

    Love
    Dale
