MY FAVOURITE POEM

IN FLANDERS FIELDS

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead.
Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

- John McCrae

  1. I wrote a little piece on Lannio's blog about seeing John McRae's name on the honour roll at Eilean Donan castle in northern Scotland. It jarred me a bit to see it, so far away from home.

It is a lovely poem, and I've heard it best sung to music by a children's choir.

    Lest we forget.

  4. A truly lovely and poignant poem, Dale. Every time we go to southern Belgium, we pass the first world war cemetries, and on those occasions when I've visited them, I've found them places of great sadness, but also of great peace. Deeply moving. They cannot leave you untouched.

  5. It could be our mother's influence as to why we've posted the same poem. It's a favourite of hers along with the poem "If".

  6. Dale, Thanks for your words of support. My problems have paled to nothing in light of your news.

It was late last night when I read your last post. It was so unexpected. I had no words....I thought maybe Hayley knew her but she didn't. I wish for Beth and her friend's family and you the strength to find comfort in what Carley brought to the earth in the too short time she was here.

I, too, send love and prayers to all who have been touched by this tragedy as my heart breaks for the loss....

...Like Margie, I can't help but think about my own girls who will too soon enter the world of driving..

    Love and hugs,
    Rachel
